Tourmaline Blade In Herkimer Diamond Focal Necklace

What makes this Herkimer Diamond a fascinating specimen is the tiny needle (dagger) of black tourmaline that has seemed to pierce the Herkimer.  To set the stage, many faceted 3mm tourmalinated quartz and black tourmaline have been added to the strand.  It all really pops with the addition of turquoise and red coral beads.

The metals are stainless steel including the one inch extender chain.  Stainless steel will not tarnish or change over time and is a very strong and lasting material.

This piece will definitely be a one of a kind and the tourmaline in the Herkimer should be handled with care. Though tourmaline is hard on the Mohs Hardness scale coming in at 7-7.5, its crystalline structure can contain internal flaws and fractures.  These make it prone to splitting or flaking especially when raw or unpolished.  Your Herkimer Diamond is a 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness scale.  This is such a cool necklace!

The inclusion of tourmaline in Herkimer Diamond (quartz) occurs during the geological formation process where both minerals are present in a liquid state, then cool and crystallize together.

Be sure to store your tourmaline necklace by itself and it will not bump against other pieces of jewelry.  If you layer necklaces with your Herkimer and tourmaline, be sure the other necklaces do not get caught on this focal.  Your Herkimer and tourmaline should last indefinitely when stored and worn with care.

A note about Herkimer Diamonds

Herkimers are actually a type of quartz, not true diamonds.  They are double terminated quartz crystals known for their exception clarity and natural faceting, which gives them a diamond like appearance.  While Herkimer Diamonds are found in great numbers in Herkimer, New York, they are also found around the world.  If you go to the facebook page, LeVay Gwinn Prospecting, you will see some examples of Herkimers in their Dolomite host rocks as they are found in nature.  This prospector mined these specimens and has made them available to purchase.  These are beautiful specimens worthy of placement on your rock collection display.
