Pearls are June’s Birthstone

Coin pearls are a type of cultured pearl that are created by inserting a flat, round nucleus into a freshwater mussel and waiting for the mussel to form the coin shape. The nucleus is usually made of shell material, like mother-of-pearl, and acts as both an irritant and a mold to help the mussel create the pearl. The mussel responds to the irritant by secreting layers of nacre around it, which eventually builds up into a Pearl. The process can take up to a year, and the resulting pearls are typically 10–12 mm in diameter.

Pearls’ iridescence comes from the way light breaks up when it hits the pearl’s surface, which is caused by the overlapping of the pearl’s many thin layers. The layers of nacre that make up a pearl are also intricate, and light can dance with them to create an ethereal luster. High quality coin pearls can have a brilliant luster and extra iridescence.

Coin pearls are primarily farmed in China, where they are often grown in lakes, rivers, and streams. The process of cultivating pearls has evolved over time to include creating other shapes, such as squares, stars, and sticks.
